Decks 1-2-3

For the novice wanting a do-it-yourself project, Home Depot provides guidance beginning with the basics of using tools all the way through to construction techniques. Size considerations, planning, design advice and material choices all figure in this homeowner’s guide to building your own deck. Instructional step-by-steps—such as mixing and pouring post footings, notching beams and building stairs—are illustrated with photographs. There are hints on working smarter, including close-ups of various joinery techniques. Accessories include skirting, privacy screens, benches and overhead structures. How to clean and repair a deck completes this comprehensive guide.

Building Decks

This 70-minute DVD is a companion to Scott Schuttner’s book, Building and Designing Decks, but stands by itself in demonstrating the how-tos of deck building. Watch as an expert first explains each procedure on a smaller mock-up deck, then applies the methods to a full-size, three-level, wraparound deck with stairs, railings and a wheelchair ramp. Schuttner shows how to level the work on sloping ground, how to allow for drainage between beams and joists and how to plan the run and rise of stairs. He discusses deck finishes and builds an attached bench and planter box to complete the project.

Porches, Decks & Patios

Author Rick Peters opens with a gallery of different types and styles of outdoor spaces. He shows the anatomy of each one and suggests various options, and then moves into makeovers and remodels. For each of the three outdoor living spaces, he shows the work done in three budget ranges: economy, mid-range and high end. The second half of the book is the practical side: performing demolitions and new installations, framing for a corrugated roof, laying new floor tile and adding a sunroom. Low-maintenance materials are featured, along with budget-conscious substitutions. This book is full of economical ideas.
