Just as smoke means there’s fire, a woodworking or DIY project means cleanup. If you find your big shop vacuum a drag, both literally and figuratively, you may find that one of these cordless suction systems could get a hold of you.

Clockwise, from left:

If you have an 18-volt Milwaukee tool, this 7.6 l wet/dry vacuum runs on the same battery, whether it’s lithium-ion (li-ion) or nickel-cadmium (Nicad). The vacuum also features handy clips for storing attachments under the lid as well as others on the side for the 1 1/4″ hose. As this tool gobbles the gunk, the high-efficiency filter traps 99.7 per cent of particles 0.3 microns in size. $100, www.milwaukeetool.com.

Ryobi One+ system owners can attack wet or dry messes with this 18-volt vac. The machine can hold 7.6 l of refuse and has a range of attachments. It can also be used for blowing stuff out the door. $60, www.ryobitools.com.

The DeWalt 2-l wet/dry vacuum is the most compact tool of the bunch. Unlike the others, it also comes with its own 18-volt Nicad battery and charger. This little guy can slurp up even the smallest bits. The hose can detach from the main nozzle, giving you some extra reach as you send waste through the HEPA filter, which traps 99.97 per cent of 0.3-micron particles. $170, www.dewalt.com.
