This quick project is perfect for first timers or as something to make with the kids. The tools required are few. I used a coping saw, handsaw and drill outfitted with a 1/2" Forstner bit (this type of bit drills flat-bottomed holes). Start by transferring the two copies of the pattern below onto a 3/4" piece of pine. Print the pattern out and glue it to your wood to use as a guide.

Cut out the two side pieces using a coping saw, then sand them with 100-grit paper to get a smooth finish. Drill holes where indicated about 3/8" deep on both sides. Cut nine pieces of 1/2" dowel 7" long. On one side put a little glue in each of the holes and push the dowels in. Once you've got the dowels fitted into one side, dab some glue in the holes on the other side and push it into place. If you plan on using this project to hold food, it's best to leave it unfinished. If you intend on using it for other items then feel free to paint or stain the project however you wish.
