Just like your household plumbing, the gear for this particular trade needs an upgrade every so often. These new tools, from spark-free torches to cold-welding compounds, have come a long way from their predecessors. So, while your older plumbing gear might still work, be sure to check out some of the innovations in the field; they just might make your next plumbing job a lot easier.
Soldering
The Classic: An Oatey lead-free solder kit (with sandpaper, tinning flux and a brush) is a great choice for traditionalists. $20.
The Latest: For those sloppy solders or those looking to save time on plumbing jobs, pre-soldered copper joints are the material of choice. A fitting comes with a ring of solder at each end. Heat the fitting until you see a bead of solder around the joint, which tells you the parts are connected. $0.85 each.
Both available at Home Depot.
Fire protection
The Classic: A bit bulky but still a solid fire stop, the Oatey flame protector, a woven heat shield, has to be laid out over your work area. $19, Home Depot.
The Latest: Getting too hot around the pipes? Bernzomatic Cold Coat gel keeps things cool and helps prevent an accidental fire. $12.
Pipe cutting
The Classic: Skip going to the gym for a day (or a week) when you set to work with this tail pipe or miniature cutter, either of which will have you twisting and turning to get the job done. $8 to $45, Home Depot.

The Latest: If your arm is getting sore from cutting pipes with a manual tool, the Milwaukee M12 tubing cutter is for you. It’s battery- (rather than arm-) powered, so relax your muscles as you get into those tight corners and let the tool work for you. $225.
