October 2003 - Splitting Wood
When it comes to the traditional Canadian fall chore of splitting wood, having the right tool can mean the difference between fruitful and frustrated

splitting wood

The best splitting tool for the job is a question of personal preference. Heavier heads split more efficiently but are more difficult to lift and swing repeatedly. For very knotty wood, multiple wedges may be necessary. Remember, an axe with a dull edge is really little more than an oddly shaped hammer—only more dangerous. Always use a sharp axe. Keep it sharp, and remove any burrs using a file. Sharpen by pushing (not pulling) the file across the blade in one direction, turn the axe over and repeat.

[1] Super Splitter: 6 lbs with 36" handle. The head’s V-shaped wings help to force the logs apart ($40).

[2] Splitting Maul: 6 lbs with an axe-style 36" handle. Used for splitting wood in conjunction with a wedge by first making a notch with the splitting edge and then driving the wedge through the log with the maul’s flat striking face ($35).

[3] Double-faced Sledgehammer: 8 lbs with 32" straight handle. Used in conjunction with a wedge ($28).

[4] Spiral Splitting Wedge: 4 1/2 lbs and 8 1/2" long. Spiral shape works as a lever and prevents the wedge from getting stuck ($36).

[5] Spring-loaded Axe: spring-loaded rotating levers on each side of the head help push wood apart and prevent the axe from getting stuck midway through a log ($75).

[6] Splitting Axe: 6 lbs with 31" handle. Built specifically for splitting, with a wedge-shaped head ($79).

[7] Hatchet: 1 lb head with 12" handle, forged from a single piece of steel with a shaped leather grip on the handle ($46).

[8] Carpenter’s Axe: 1 1/2 lb head and an 18" handle. It is well balanced and offers a good size and control for splitting small pieces of kindling or for limbing green wood ($95).
