Dream Shop
A wish list for luxury tools

You sold Nortel at the right time, you won the lottery, your rich uncle left you a bundle—whatever the reason, you have money to spend on high-end tools. More seriously, many woodworkers rationalize the expense because these are also high-quality tools. Spend a little more on a tool, take care of it and you’ll save money in the long run. At least, that’s how you can justify the splurge.

Karl Holtey has been making planes for 20 years and he puts 150 hours of labour into a typical plane. Perfectionist or obsessed? You decide. (A1 22 1/2" jointer/panel plane, $15,550; holteyplanes.com or call 011-44-1549-202500)

The extra-long, cast-iron table makes this 8" deluxe jointer worth the big-ticket cash. Made in Drummondville, Que. ($4,060; call 888-949-1161 or general.ca)

These high-carbon blue-steel bench chisels were hand-forged by master chiselmaker Akio Tasai, who apprenticed at age 12 ($2,260 for set; japanwoodworker.com or call 800-537-7820)

MIDDLE PHOTO: With a brushless motor, this three- amp C12 Festool drill should last a lifetime ($560; call 877-423-3559 or hafeleonline.com)

Outfit your workshop with modular Dura cabinets in a range of configurations. They’re made from heavy-gauge steel and come with lockable castors or adjustable feet ($6,800; angel-wings.ca or call 888-920-0615)

BOTTOM PHOTO: Lamello made the first biscuit joiners and they’re still preferred for their long life and precision—using the front dial of the Top20 S3, you can raise or lower the cutter by a tenth of a millimetre ($850; lamello.com or info@ibexent.com)

Although it’s new, Laguna’s Pinnacle lathe will impress turners with its 48" in-board turning capacity and the ability to rout an 8' column. ($10,600 with spiral attachment and copy feature; call 800-234-1976 or lagunatools.com)
