pic 1. Veritas Standard Block Plane, a workhorse ductile cast-iron body with brass locking knob and A2 steel blade, $139, www.leevalley.com, 800-267-8761

2. Stanley model 12-247, an economical cast-iron body with epoxy coating and steel blade, $28, www.stanleytools.com, 800-263-6292

3. Bridge City Tool Works HP-6, an exquisitely precise brass body with rosewood inlay and A2 steel blade, $386, www.bridgecitytools.com, 800-253-3332

Small marvels, block planes are shorter than the length of your outstretched hand, which makes them perfect for keeping one in your tool belt or shop apron as you work. They’re also small enough to use with a one-handed grip and, with a blade set at about 20°, block planes are ideal for cutting end-grain. Use one to fit joints, trim parts or perform other delicate tasks.
