April 2005 - Rockin' on the Job |

Rugged radios built for the work site |
If
you’re looking for a reason to replace your sawdust-filled,
tinny-sounding, underpowered shop radio, it’s hard to
ignore the testosterone-fuelled chorus coming from tool companies’
new boom boxes. Built with rough-and-tumble frames that can
survive the drop from a tailgate and weather-resistant cases
for life outdoors, these titans of tunage will crank the music
loud. They’re made for job sites busy with circ saws and
air nailers, so these radios can be plugged in or run off tool
batteries—some even charge those batteries. Oh, they all
have a clock, too.

1. The DeWalt CD011 Heavy-Duty Work Site
Radio/Charger belts out good, clear sound. It doesn’t
play CDs, but it offers a small carrying case for CDs or a CD
player, and a portable CD or MP3 player can be connected to
the unit to play tunes in addition to the radio. When plugged
in, the DeWalt charges its own batteries in one hour ($180)
2. The Milwaukee 49-24-0200 Job Site Radio
with Rockford Fosgate sound system features the weather
band in addition to AM and FM radio, so you can get the latest
conditions from Environment Canada. The steel grille over the
speakers protects them from errant hammer swings. The radio
is equipped with a removable soft bag for storing CDs and a
CD or MP3 player, which can be connected to the unit. It doesn’t
charge Milwaukee batteries, but it can run off three sizes of
them ($150)
3. The Bosch PB10-CD Power Box packs
a lot of features into its cube-in-a-roll-cage design. It both
runs from and charges Bosch batteries, plus it offers four GFCI
outlets and a 12-volt connector, so it will charge cellphones
and other small gadgets you usually charge in the car. The Bosch
not only plays audio CDs on an internal player, it will play
MP3 files that have been burned to a CD-R or CD-RW for hours
of listening from just one disc ($250).
