To dimension a large stone to size, lay it on a ridged, flat surface.

Use a pitching chisel lightly to score a line completely around the stone to weaken it.

Then use firmer, direct strikes along the same line to break the stone to size.

To split a stone that is too thick, first mark the layout line using a tape measure and soft stone or chalk.

Similar to the technique above, trace the approximate line across the face of stone, parallel to the grain.

Use firmer, direct strikes to deepen the line, eventually breaking the stone into the desired shape.
