A taut string line will help keep the starter course of stones straight.

Place a level across the length and width of the stone. If necessary, use the butt of a mallet to tap the stone to seat it firmly in place. Be sure to keep each stone level, as any variations will be magnified as the wall grows in length and height.

Stones with uneven surfaces can be roughly shaped with a straight chisel and mallet.

Continue to build each course of the wall level using the taut string line as a guide.

Align and level corner stones carefully, as they provide important reference points.
