The finer details
Just as a finely crafted piece of furniture demands quality hardware, a custom fence should be complemented with the right finishing touches:
1. The flat-topped copper caps used for this fence project are from Maine Ornamental and are available at local home centres. Post caps also come in stainless-steel finishes or a combination of wood and copper.
2. Gate latches, an integral part of most fence projects, are another place to show off great hardware. An automatic closer, available from Lee Valley Tools, will keep your gate from swinging in the wind.
3. A self-aligning latch, also from Lee Valley Tools, will ensure your gate latches securely behind you.

Finishing touches
Pine boards are fairly inexpensive, but they need to be properly prepared and protected if they're going to last outdoors.
1. Begin by sanding with 80-grit paper to remove any mill glaze and help the wood absorb the paint.
2. Cover any knots with varnish to prevent them from bleeding through the finish coat of stain.
3. Spray the areas that are difficult to reach, such as the grooves between the boards.
4. Use a regular roller for large, flat sections.
