A few corbels and curves make an otherwise simple project looked terrific. This wall-mounted storage centre and coat rack proves it. Before you get started, purchase the baskets and coat hooks you intend to use, then measure them to fine-tune the project size.

Begin by assembling the main body of the storage box, using glue and finishing nails to hold together butt joints. Adding a face frame to the front of the box makes the project look better by increasing the apparent thickness of these parts. But if you want to keep the project simple, forget the face frame.
Either way, the top edge of the box requires moulding that’s reminiscent of crown. You can use door casing, baseboard or a small chair rail oriented with the widest edge up. The spaces between uprights at the back of the boxes also require lengths of wood fastened in between to act as mounting strips.
Set the box aside for now and begin to work on the corbels and the coat-hook backboard. Although the corbels look complicated, they’re fairly easy to build if you have a bandsaw. The trick involves constructing them in layers.
Start by tracing curved outlines on 1⁄2"- and 3⁄4"-thick stock for the inner and outer corbel layers. Saw these two shapes (leaving the bottom sections uncut for now), then assemble them so the thicker, middle section is inset 3⁄8" to 1⁄2" from the thinner outer parts. A couple of small finishing nails prevent these pieces from sliding around after glue and clamping pressure are applied. As you work, use only a little bit of glue, especially near the front edges. Squeeze-out here is hard to remove.
