Most bathrooms are wired with an over-the-mirror junction box, which is what leads many homeowners to install the strip of vanity lights found at any lighting store. But to add a little interest and a great light source, you can switch to wall sconces (if your local bylaws permit DIY electrical work). All you need is a little know-how.
 | After shutting down the power, remove the old fixture and pull the cabinet from its opening. |
 | Trace the new fixture boxes. The location may need to move based on plumbing and wiring. |
 | Cut the opening with a drywall saw. Use a hole saw if you have lathe-and-plaster walls. |
 | Find any obstructions with an electronic scope or use a flashlight and handheld mirror. |
