When I undertook this bathroom renovation, I was on a tight budget but had a large to-do list. After some careful planning, I was able to achieve this big transformation in seven days with a budget of $2,500. (I admit I went slightly over, but even a perfectly planned renovation runs into some hitches along the way.)
Originally, the room was cramped by a large vanity and a low ceiling in the shower stall. Like most bathroom renos, the fixtures were dated and needed to go. But the tub was a time-worn gem—a cast-iron unit with a wonderfully solid feel that matched the era of the house perfectly. A similar replacement would have used up the entire budget. The solution was a professional refinishing, which left a lot of money for a new toilet and pedestal sink, tile floor and shower surround, light fixture and some wainscotting around the bathroom’s perimeter. Except for a small adjustment to the sink’s supply and drain, the plumbing was left untouched. To make some extra room, the dropped ceiling of the tub stall was raised and the pedestal sink was recessed into a nook that stole a bit of space from a closet in the adjoining room. Losing the under-vanity storage was a negative, but the pedestal sink opened up the space visually.
